Have you recently had your facade plastered, but are you not satisfied with the result? There may be poor placement of crepi. In this blog post we discuss ten signals that indicate inadequate implementation of facade plastering. By recognizing these, you can take timely action and ensure that your facade looks spick and span again. Or are you planning to install crepi yourself? Then be sure to read our step-by-step plan in the crepi guide first!

The 10 signs of bad facade plastering

  1. Crepi or insulation that is coming loose: It is possible that the wind load on the facade was not taken into account here. It is also possible that the facade was not prepared sufficiently, which means that the adhesives do not adhere sufficiently. A painted facade, for example, must first be pretreated. Strengthening the bond in combination with professional reattachment is the solution here.
  2. Irregular corners: This indicates an incorrect choice of profile or no use of starting, corner or end profiles. Correct reinstallation of the corner profiles is necessary here.
  3. Rust formation and crumbling corners: Rust on the corners or crumbling of the corners. This indicates an incorrect choice of profile or no use of corner profiles. Here too, correct reinstallation of corner profiles is a necessity.
  4. Blisters behind the crepi: These blisters are caused by the inflation of the top layer in humid weather. This may indicate a wet or damp wall or rising damp from the ground. It is also possible that the underlayer had not yet dried out sufficiently when applied. Depending on the nature of the moisture problems, a water-repellent coating can provide relief.
  5. Cracks at windows, sills or roof connections: This is caused by the failure or poor application of swelling strips. Solution: Reattach swelling bands and ensure a good seal.
  6. Small cracks on the surface: This is due to poor installation of the reinforcement nets on corners and reveals. Solution: Reinforcing crack-prone areas with reinforcement nets and repairing damaged areas.
  7. Surfaces in the facade: This is due to incorrect use of insulation or poor sanding of the crepi, causing the insulation panels to become visible. Here you can sand the crepi again and apply an additional layer to still obtain a smooth surface.
  8. Visible line between floors: When applying the crepi layer, too much time was left between implementations. Complete facade surfaces must be completed in one go to achieve a beautiful, continuous result! Just as with surfaces in the facade, the best solution is to apply an extra layer of crepi.
  9. Stains on the crepi: This is due to poor mixing of the products. The simplest and cheapest solution is to repaint the crepi with crepi paint. Tip: preferably use water-repellent crepi paint!
  10. Streaks on the facade due to poor drainage: because facade details are missing, for example sills, roof profiles, rainwater gutters, skirting boards, etc., all rainwater is drained through the facade and you get drainage. Correct installation of facade details such as sills, roof profiles, rainwater gutters and skirting boards to prevent runoff.
